PERSONAL PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT
Personal protective equipment, commonly referred to as "PPE", is equipment worn to minimize exposure to hazards that cause serious workplace injuries and illnesses. These injuries and illnesses may result from contact with chemical, radiological, physical, electrical, mechanical, or other workplace hazards.

Lab Coats, and Coveralls
Clothing such as a lab coat are used to provide protection from hazards that may damage the skin or personal clothing. The lab coat needs to be worn in the lab and removed when person leaves the laboratory.
Gloves
Gloves must be worn when there is the potential for injury or exposure to skin contact from different hazards.
Not all gloves are equally effective in preventing skin contact, especially from chemical exposures. Chemicals eventually permeate gloves; however, they can be used safely for specific time periods. See gloves' characteristics!

Eye and Face Protection
Hazards requiring eye/face protection include particles, molten metal, liquids, biological or radioactive materials, chemical gases or vapors, and lasers or intense visible light from welding. Even very small amounts of a material may cause eye damage and require use of protective eyewear.
Dust Masks and Respiratory Protection

They are used to prevent overexposure to an inhalation hazard or irritant.

A face mask is a product that covers the wearer’s nose and mouth.
A barrier face covering is a product worn on the face specifically covering at least the wearer’s nose and mouth, with the primary purpose of providing a particulate filtration to reduce the amount of inhaled particulate material.
A surgical mask is a loose-fitting, disposable device that creates a physical barrier between the mouth and nose of the wearer and potential contaminants in the immediate environment.
An N95 respirator is a respiratory protective device designed to achieve a very close facial fit and very efficient filtration of airborne particles.
Dust masks can be worn against non-toxic nuisance dusts during activities like mowing, gardening, sweeping and dusting. These masks are not respirators and do not offer protection against hazardous dusts, gases or vapors.
Hearing Protection
Hearing protectors are required to prevent noise induced hearing loss. Hearing protection devices reduce the noise energy reaching and causing damage to the inner ear. Ear muffs and earplugs are the most common types of PPE.
According to the CDC: everyone "shall be required to wear hearing protectors when engaged in work that exposes them to noise that equals or exceeds 85 dBA. Workers exposed to any single impulse noise level that exceed 100 dBA should wear double hearing protection (i.e., they should wear earplugs and earmuffs simultaneously)"
Protective Footwear
Some tasks that have hazards can cause foot damages.
Consider the potential risks to the feet and choose footwear accordingly.
